Jerusalem’s Place in the Islamic Faith:
The glorification of Jerusalem among Muslims began since the emergence of the Islamic call in Mecca through the incident of Isra and Mi’raj, which took place a year before the Hijra, i.e. the year (621) AD. The Holy Qur’an has indicated this in Surat Al-Isra: The Almighty said, “Glory be to Him who was taken prisoner by His servant at night from the Sacred Mosque to the Al-Aqsa Mosque, around which we were blessed to show him from our signs that He is the All-Hearing and Insightful” Surah Al-Isra: Any 1 .
In this heavenly journey:
-
The five daily prayers were imposed on the Muslims.
-
Jerusalem was the first qibla of Muslims until the qibla was transformed into the Kaaba in the second year of the Hijra.
-
Through this heavenly journey Jerusalem was linked to the faith of Muslims.
The number of hadiths that talk about the blessing of Jerusalem exceeds (70) hadiths, including:
-
The hadith that was reported from Maimunah Mawlat of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).
-
The hadith that was reported from Abu Saeed Al-Khudri.
The Holy Prophet advised a number of companions to live in Jerusalem after its conquest, Among the companions who inhabited it were Shaddad ibn Aws and Ubadah ibn al-Samit.
The place of Jerusalem in the Islamic heritage:
-
Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab visited it and wrote to its people a security known as the Omari Covenant.
-
Caliph Othman bin Affan Ain Silwan stopped the poor Muslims, and many Umayyad caliphs were keen to take allegiance in Jerusalem, such as Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan, Abdul Malik bin Marwan, Al-Waleed bin Abdul Malik, Suleiman bin Abdul Malik.
-
The Umayyad caliphs encouraged the scientific movement and participated in science circles in it.
-
Many Umayyad caliphs had close ties to their scholars, including Raja ibn Haywa , who had close ties to Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, his son Suleiman, Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, and Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik.
-
She is the author of several books on the history and virtues of Jerusalem , such as the book of the Jerusalemite historian: Mujir al-Din al-Hanbali “The Galilee Man in the History of Jerusalem and Hebron”.
The religious status of Jerusalem is stipulated in the Qur’an, the Sunnah and the sayings of the Companions and followers. It formed an attraction from various Islamic regions, so they gave it to worship, visitation, science and education. Its sanctity also prompted the caliphs and princes to pay attention to it and its people in order to confirm the Arabism and Islamism of its identity.
