⭕In a remarkable step. The UAE abstained in favor of a US draft resolution condemning Russia’s war against Ukraine. The Emirati English-language newspaper The National also asked its editors to refrain from referring to the war as an “invasion.” Suffice it as a “military operation”.
⭕The UAE could have voted in favor of the resolution knowing for sure that the Russian veto would stop it. Despite this ability… However, it has taken this position opposing the United States, To understand this situation, which reveals the complexities and geopolitical calculations facing the UAE as a result of the effects of the escalation of the international conflict.
We need to take note of the following considerations quickly:
◀️There is a policy of the UAE that has been in place for some time based on the rule of zeroing problems.
◀️The United States’ rearrangement of priorities has led, from the UAE’s perspective, to a downgrade level of commitment to Gulf security. Especially in conjunction with the attacks on the UAE by the Houthis.
◀️The UAE has come to believe that the United States should not be relied exclusively on. And that other options must be kept open, such as Russia, China and the Zionist entity, To fill the voids that the United States will leave behind.
◀️ The UAE’s desire to win the Russian position towards reclassifying the Houthi group as a terrorist group, and the possibility of Russia pressuring Iran if necessary, In light of the procrastination of the United States on this matter.
◀️US pressure on the UAE – which accompanied the F35 deal – aimed at the UAE abandoning technological cooperation with China.
◀️The UAE does not have the same influence as Qatar with the United States, which has designated Qatar as a major non-NATO ally.

The bottom line:
⭕There are contradictions in the determinants of the geopolitical scene resulting from Washington’s relative abandonment of its commitments to its allies in the region. This confuses the calculations of these allies and pushes them to search for alternatives in order to motivate Washington to restore relations to the high level they were. That is, the UAE is not in the process of abandoning its alliance with the United States. But it seeks to re-empower and strengthen it.
